Te Aitanga a Mahaki
Upstream Migration of glass eels in the Waipaoa River 2007
Te Wai Māori Trust supported Te Aitanga a Mahaki through the Wai Ora fund to investigate the number, size, species, timing, and various environmental factors affecting glass tuna migrating into the Waipaoa River. This information was used to determine recruitment levels and barriers of migratory elvers in the Waipaoa catchment.
The knowledge generated from this research will further enable Te Aitanga a Mahaki to implement eel management initiatives that include prudent harvest measures, restocking, and habitat restoration thus enabling the fishery to rebuild numbers and sizes of eels available for customary use.
