Te Wai Māori Trust supported Rongowhakaata Iwi Inanga Spawning project aimed at planting native species and stock proof fencing to enhance and protect inanga spawning sites from predation and stock invation; providing ‘safe harbour’ to rear as per their life cycle, and monitoring by iwi. The project was broken down into four key objectives:
- To identify the existing and potential native fish spawning areas within the Gisborne region.
- To develop the capacity within the local community and iwi groups to identify potential fish spawning areas and to have the skills to undertake restoration of these areas.
- To pilot the restoration of fish spawning in the lower Waipaua/Te Arai Rivers as a learning exercise for local community and iwi, and as a demonstration of the potential for wider restoration of fish spawning in the region.
- To ensure the Council’s management of the Waipaua Flood Control Scheme does not threaten the ongoing ability of native fish to spawn in the lower reaches of the Waipaua and Te Arai Rivers.
