Whangawehi Catchment Management Group Incorporated
Whangawehi Catchment Restoration Project
The Whangawehi Catchment Management Group (WCMG) has managed a community led restoration programme with agencies since 2013. The project has been extremely successful and the WCMG is now building on this work by progressing the implementation of their catchment management plan. The Wai Ora funding is helping WCMG to do this. The management plan focusses on three projects:
- Retirement of 10 ha of riparian margins, establishing 23,000 native trees
- Extending the community based water and fish monitoring programme
- Displaying an interpretative sign around shelter facilities.
The project is Marae led and is based on the concepts of kaitiakitanga, respect of differences, trust and good faith. Mātauranga Māori is at the heart of WCMG’s work, and they spend a significant amount of time transferring their local knowledge to tamariki at their kura.
