Shared funding is preferred (i.e iwi/hapu/local or regional council/other funding agents provide funding to project). Applicants are encouraged to apply for single year funding, with a maximum of $70,000 total for the entire project. Applicants need to provide a minimum 20% contribution to the project, whether it be cash or in-kind.

Annual funding decisions are based on the:

  • funding criteria
  • priority areas specified by Wai Māori
  • quality of applications received.

Funding will not be provided for:

  • purchasing capital items and assets
  • purchase and improvement of buildings
  • costs relating to motor vehicles
  • costs relating to normal business operating expenses and business establishment
  • retrospective costs (i.e costs incurred before the funding is awarded)
  • intellectual property royalties
  • activities that ultimately lead to a commercial venture.
