Title of Project: Status of Eels in the Rangitaiki
River Reservoirs and Tributaries - 2008

Click here to download PDF [15.7MB] PDF

The overall aim of this project is for Ngati Manawa to develop and manage their freshwater fisheries. This will be supported by training of Ngati Manawa members in the development of management and monitoring plans for their tuna fishery. The research conducted will include determining the density of tuna in the Rangitaiki River at the peak of the summer and the density of eels in habitats that are favoured by smaller eels. This research will also determine if disease is a major factor in the survival of elvers in the wild and if on-growing of elvers in a protected environment could increase survival rate.

Synexe Consulting Organisation: Synexe Consulting and Ngati Hori ki Kohupatiki

Title of Project: Working towards determining water allocation for customary fisheries: The case of Ngati Hori
Click here to download PDF [8MB] PDF

This research will enable Ngati Hori ki Kohupatiki to participate as kaitiaki of the Karamu Stream. Methods will be investigated for converting Ngati Hori’s cultural information about customary fisheries into technical information about flow levels in the Karamu stream. A model will be created to facilitate Maori engagement on water flow allocation in New Zealand where cultural values in fisheries habitat are dependent on the restoration of water flows within a water body. Te Roopu Taiao o UtakuraOrganisation: Te Roopu Taiao o Utakura

Title of Project: The Utakura River Freshwater Fishery

This project will gather information on the freshwater fishery in the Utakura River. The research will document the oral history of the river as well as the current state of the fishery through the adaptation of a cultural health index and environmental performance indicators. This includes measuring taonga species, pest animals, and plant species.

Te Runanga o NgaiterangiOrganisation: Te Runanga o Ngaiterangi
(Tauranga Moana Iwi Customary Fisheries Management Committee)

Title of Project: Nga Tau Tiaki i nga Tipuranga Tutewehiwehi

The focus of this research is to examine the impact of rapid urbanisation on freshwater fisheries in Tauranga Moana. TMICFMC aim to restore, enhance and maintain the right to kaitiakitanga and to preserve the health of freshwater fisheries.  This will be achieved by a comprehensive literature review and the development of a project plan on the impacts of urbanisation in Tauranga Moana.

Waimarie o Whatitiri Marae TrustOrganisation: Waimarie o Whatitiri Marae Trust

Title of Project: Project Waimarie

The focus of this research is the monitoring of surface and ground water which is under pressure by the increased use of bores along the Waipao River. The research will also monitor invertebrates, fish and tuna numbers at traditional eel gathering sites. This information will be gathered from kaumatua and will provide information on better land management techniques in relation to freshwater.
