This research aims to empower Ngapuhi to better manage, protect and enhance their eel fishery and has been coordinated in partnership with Te Runanga o Whangaroa, Ngati Hine and others to begin the process of understanding the spatial distribution, abundance and growth of tuna in Te Tai Tokerau. This research will contribute further to the knowledge base of whanau and hapu that already manage the lake to ensure long term sustainability of the lake for the eel stocks. Based on previous NIWA research, Trustees have implemented a number of practical initiatives such as fencing the entire parameter to prevent degradation of raupo. To assess indicators of well being of the shortfin eel population of Lake Poukawa and review management practices of the lake. This is following research conducted ten years ago on the sustainability of eels stocks. Download PDF »

Te Aitanga a Mahaki overall goal is the restoration of the mauri to Waipaoa River. This group has been committed to achieving this goal through the various projects that they have completed over the last 5 years. This has ranged from marae based training to projects funded under the Ministry of Fisheries sustainable research fund. This project will enhance an already strong knowledge base around eel abundance within this catchment and will assist Te Aitanga a Mahaki to implement eel management initiatives. Members of Te Aitanga a Mahaki have already been involved in previous research on the Waipaoa River and have been involved in customary training programmes.

This information will result in a comprehensive database of aquatic life forms present and provide Trustees information to implement sustainable management initiatives for the future well being of Whakaki Lake.
